GalwayOfficially named a city in 1484, and originally ruled as an oligarchy by 14 merchant families named "The Tribes of Galway". As it lies on the River Corrib between Lough Corrib & Galway Bay, it served as an integral part of international trade between Spain & France. The city remained under rule of the English crown until 1692. The city currently has a population of 79,504.
